The Thames Gateway and the re-emergence of regional strategic planning: the implications for water resource management

Article Abstract:

The plans to develop the Thames Gateway area may have an adverse effect on the water supply, particularly as supplies in South East England are already under threat. Supporters of the scheme see the lack water as a problem to be solved which should not compromise the overall plan. The Thames Gateway scheme involves the development of an area to the east of London, to include 110,000 new households. Demand for water would therefore increase substantially to serve the new houses. Some observers have suggested that the planned sustainable development of the area will not be possible.

The revival of regional planning: government intentions; local reality?

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the evolution of post-war regional planning in England is followed by a consideration of the present government's plans to strengthen it. The local role of the planning system is examined and the emergence of regional planning development agencies is discussed. The proposition is advanced that regional planning will be ineffective unless directly-elected regional assemblies are established.
