The UK and the European Community; periphery or core?

Article Abstract:

Some observers feel that the UK is not fully committed to EC ideals. The Maastricht Treaty had not been ratified in early 1993, and UK attitudes to the Social Charter and movement of workers has been criticised. EC monetary union looked doubtful in 1993 as some of the member currencies were too weak. 'Social dumping' or the movement of workers to the richer EC countries has also caused friction between the UK and other EC members. There is some controversy over the Common Fisheries Policy amongst the UK and French fishermen.

The euro and the UK budgetary contribution

Article Abstract:

There are still very mixed views in the UK on the issue of whether to join European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Prime Minister Tony Blair continues to take a cautious approach to EMU, emphasizing that a number of issues, including the likely impact on employment, must be taken into account before a final decision is made. It is important to be aware that EMU could bring extremely significant long-term benefits, including boosting business confidence.
