The Wyoming paradox
Article Abstract:
The state of Wyoming is seeing only very limited economic growth. It ranks second among US states in terms of unearned income, receiving $5,200 per person from the federal government, and also has a $2.4 billion trust account. Its unearned income has allowed it to avoid taking action to boost its economy, and there is a strong sense of stagnation. Local people are very ambivalent about growth and feel little obligation to make a positive contribution to the state.

Article Abstract:
The International Stage Stop Sled Dog Race is an 11-day event beginning and finishing in Jackson, Wyoming. Towns pay to participate, with smaller towns paying less, and the race helps to bind communities. Many towns have been affected by declining industries on which they once relied, though Jackon is wealthy and real estate prices have risen. Sublette County is an expanding petroleum production center which is also affected by the development of Jackson.
