The big heat

Article Abstract:

Mass extinctions have occurred on Earth five times, and these include the Cretaceous mass extinction, ending the dinosaurs, and the Permian and Triassic mass extinctions. The Triassic mass extinction could be linked to vulcanic activity which led to global warming through an increase in amounts of carbon dioxide. Research on this hypothesis has been carried out by Jennifer McElwain and others at Sheffield University, England. The researcher argue that this global warming led to plant deaths, which in turn led to a shortage of plants for animals to eat, affecting the food chain as a whole. Other mass extinctions could also be linked to vulcanic activity.
