Relations between black domestic workers and their white employers in South Africa have begun to change in the new democracy. Domestics now have government contracts that assure them certain rights and benefits. The live-in maid is beginning to become less common.

Trouble in the pipeline

Unocal and Total are pushing the construction of their $1 billion pipeline in spite of political obstacles. The project has been criticized for possible environmental dangers, and the US has enacted a ban on US investments in Myanmar.
