A United Nations meeting on human rights is divided between the wealthy northern hemisphere which demands more freedoms worldwide and southern hemisphere countries which are usually poorer and find freedom expensive. The north should listen to the south's concerns but not their excuses.

Human-rights groups are increasingly focusing not just on political and civil rights but on economic and social rights such as the right to housing, food and health care. However, campaigning for such rights is more complex than campaigning against torture or political injustice.
