The buyout market takes stock

Article Abstract:

Industry observers suggest prices will be more reasonable in the European buyout market during 1999. Although some companies will suffer from having paid too high prices in 1998. The European buyout market was adversely affected, in the second half of 1998, by the economic crises in Russia and Asia. The first six months of the year had seen several large deals, such as IPC Magazines transaction for $1.4 billion. Some deals faced difficulty when prices were reduced due to the economic downturn and private equity houses were not prepared to pay prices not in tune with the economic situation.

A friendly word of advice

Article Abstract:

Financial advisers are eyeing Spain's mergers and acquisitions market, where a number of sectors are ripe for restructuring. The pending merger of BCH and Banco Santander is notable, not only for its size, but for its friendliness, with adviser Goldman Sachs unusually providing fairness opinions to both boards of directors. Consolidation in Spain's electricity, oil, gas and telecommunications sectors are expected to provide numerous opportunities for investment banks.
