Chips on the block: Taiwan to sell state-owned semiconductor maker

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's government plans to sell an up-to-date semiconductor plant located in Hsinchu Science Park south of Taipei. The plant was established to spur growth in Taiwan's semiconductor industry and has succeeded in this goal. Increased parliamentary opposition to government spending coupled with rising distrust for state-sponsored industrial research has prompted the government to turn the plant over to private owners. However, the government will stipulate that the new owners must focus on manufacturing Drams memory chips.

Baring down

Article Abstract:

The collapse of merchant bank Barings reflects internal divisions and a lack of controls, but it could have happened to any securities operation dealing in the same instruments. Barings had a strong reputation in the region as one of the first banks to expand beyond Hong Kong and Tokyo, and many regarded its research teams as the best in the business. The Asian environment, however, demands particular management skills that are difficult to develop elsewhere, in particular as new operations go up.
