The consequences for manufacturers of changes in retail distribution

Article Abstract:

The move by a major food retailer into central warehousing for its supplies resulted in a demand for lower costings from a biscuit manufacturers due to decreased warehousing and deliverie costs. The retailer's demand for a 30-pence decrease in prices was shown to significantly cut into the manufacturer's margin despite the reduction in handling costs. The study values are mitigated by an established hierarchy of desirable locations for warehouses.

Variations in price elasticities

Article Abstract:

One year's worth of weekly scanner data on 30 products of a household goods group were subjected to multilevel analyses to develop a new price response curve and examine the factors affecting price elasticity per store. The analyses, which covered three brands sold in 74 stores of a UK retail chain, revealed a variable price elasticity and 'no systematically different price effects between stores.'
