The cry from the outback

Article Abstract:

Australia will hold a general election on Oct 3 1998, and there is concern about the impact of Pauline Hanson's One Nation party which opposes immigration and favors protectionism. Support is strongest for Hanson in rural Australia where farmers have been hit by drops in prices for wool, wheat and beef, and have seen rising debt. They also face environmental controls and are concerned about the impact of a 1996 judgement on Aboriginal land rights. Asia is a key export market for Australian farmers, and their support may be less than expected.

Pauline Green, the European parliament's cop

Article Abstract:

There has been a call to reform the allowance system of the European parliament from Pauline Green, Socialist parliamentary group leader from the United Kingdom. Green is seen likely to become president of the parliament following elections in 1999. There are disputes as to whether the European Central Bank should report to national parliaments or the European parliament. The European parliament is likely to remain unpopular while it is associated with scandals relating to expenses and the like.

The peril of Pauline

Article Abstract:

Australia will hold a general election in Oct 1998, and the result could be close. This could give power to Pauline Hanson's One Nation party. Hanson favors protectionism and a halt to immigration, especially from Asia. Asia accounts for over 60% of Australia's exports. The remedies that Hanson proposes would not help Australia, which has benefited from immigration through new business links, new ideas, and language skills which have attracted foreign investment.
