Cisco Systems is undergoing constant revolution and sees speed as important in a networked economy. Cisco was set up in 1984 to sell routing devices and routers have become important for the internet. The company also provides a rangeof hardware and software, including the Internet-working Operating Dystem. Chief executive, John Chambers, has emphasized marketing since he took on the post in 1995. He stresses customer focus and sees a need for adaptation since new procedures and porducts can rapidly become commodities.

Article Abstract:

Steve Jobs has been Apple Computer interim chief executive for the 16 months to Jan 1999, and has achieved a number of successes. The company has become profitable, and its iMac has been successfully launched and has increased the company's market share. An agreement has been reached with Microsoft, allowing Microsoft's Office product to be used by the Apple Mackintosh system. Some new technologies have been abandoned. There are still uncertainties resulting from trends such as the move toward new types of information appliances.

Cisco at speed

Article Abstract:

Cisco Systems has been able to expand with the help of the internet. The company had problems in dealing with customer support, and solved this by putting support online so that most problems could be tackled by customers themselves. The customers also shared information with each other and with the company. Customer orders could also be dealt with more efficiently online. Information is more easily accessible, costs have been cut, and time has been freed for meeting customers and other activities.
