The effect of monetary policy on industrial performance

Article Abstract:

Those who favour the UK government's current approach to macroeconomic policy believe that a tight monetary policy brings long-term advantages, even though it has a short-term negative impact on manufacturing output and employment. The long-term benefits include higher competitiveness and lower costs as a result of lower rates of inflation. In contrast, some trade unionists believe that current macroeconomic policy has been too limiting, causing industrial output to rise at an insufficient rate to boost employment. Supply side efficiency will be damaged if excessive pressure is placed on the manufacturing and internationally traded areas of the economy.

Recycling and waste management

Article Abstract:

Recycling has become a prominent issue in the UK as more attention is focused on the disadvantages of landfill sites. It is clear that recycling can lead to a reduction in pollution and can cut the use of non-renewable and other resources which are in limited supply. However, market forces tend not to give full consideration to the external costs of waste disposal, and it can therefore be hard to pursue environmentally-friendly waste disposal policies.

Demergers

Article Abstract:

There is a strong trend towards corporate demergers in the UK. This has been prompted by a growing belief that companies should focus on their core operations and by the introduction of flexible production methods, which bring opportunities for streamlining. Demergers form part of a general shift towards rationalisation. This also includes outsourcing, downsizing and restructuring.
