Article Abstract:

China, India and Vietnam are coming to terms with their loss-generating state-owned companies because their economic competitiveness depends on efficient management of these organizations. The economic liberalization initiated in these countries can be countered by the burden posed by public sector companies. Government subsidies for these firms, their monopoly in some categories, the overstaffing and bureaucracy are all factors that make them ineffective. Fear of closure and budget constraints have motivated some firms to improve performance.

Theatre of cruelty: UN tries to protect human rights as abuses grow

Article Abstract:

Concern over rising political killings has led the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia (Untac) to make efforts for raising human-rights awareness in the country. While the Khmer Rouge is responsible for some of the killings, the rest are believed to have been arranged by hardliners in the Phnom Penh government who are afraid of losing the election. PM Hun Sen protested against Untac's public allegations that some of the killings of opposition members were initiated by ruling party officials.

Stampede for oil: US firms rush to explore Vietnamese waters

Article Abstract:

US oil explorers have gone to Vietnam in the wake of Washington's trade embargo removal. The finalization of exploration rights to Vietnam's offshore areas, however, might be hampered by territorial disagreements between Vietnam and China. US oil executives are reportedly interested in bidding for the potentially rich Thanh Long field. Vietnam is accommodating to the US firms because they offer diplomatic protection in case of untoward incidents with China.
