However, the region can survive if it maintains high saving, good education, flexible labor markets, and open economies. East Asia should ignore the temptation to raise more barriers to competition and speed up deregulation.

The Dayton peace treaty that ended ethnic conflict in the former Yugoslavia is perhaps the first large-scale restoration of peace based on persuasion rather than force.
