Careers of women managers in the retail industry

Article Abstract:

A study that focuses on dreams, ambitions and careers of women managers in the retail industry showed that women are hired in retail management programs in an equal percentage to men and that women are capable of obtaining management positions. However, it was found out that only a small number of women get the position as store managers even if women have shown commitment and interest to the desired position. Pertinent facts which became evident on the research include promotional procedures and criteria, perceptions of management as male, networking, political awareness and mentoring.

Flexibility, skill and technical change in UK retailing

Article Abstract:

Employment patterns in the British retailing industry in the 1980s were studied. The two economic issues addressed were flexibility and technological change and skilled work. Statistics were extracted from the ESRC's Social Change and Economic Life Initiative. A sample of 72 retailers from six British localities was used. Technological change had further improved the skills of qualified and trained employees. There was very little growth in labor despite the increase in part-time employment.
