Viacom sets anchors in Asia

Article Abstract:

Viacom International Inc. intends to introduce its Nickelodeon children's cable channel in Japan and the Philippines in late 1998. Viacom's plan is part of the firm's strategy to significantly enhance the presence of its channel in Asia. Viacom will introduce the 24-hour channel in Japan via DirectTV, a direct-to-home system with approximately 140,000 viewers, while the firm is currently selling individual Nickelodeon programs to terrestrial broadcasters in the Philippines. Nickelodeon features programs such as "Rugrats" and "Clarissa Explains It All."

Asian broadcasters and other professionals who earned their education in the US and Europe find success in their own home. Asia is an emerging market for career opportunities because of so many industries that are still in the development stage. Western job markets have long been saturated with business personnel and professionals, making it difficult for Asian professionals to compete.
