The fetus is father of the man

Article Abstract:

Data on pregant women has been studied along with the health of their children, who have since become adults, and links have been discovered which could explain behavioral as well as health problems. Sons conceived during a Dutch famine in 1945 were more likely to suffer from schizophrenia, and there are also linked between personality disorder and maternal nutrition. Maternal testosterone is linked to a higher predisposition to smoking, but not maternal smoking, which can cut testosterone levels. Maternal obesity and infections in pregnancy have also been linked to schizophrenia.

The Star Wars rule of clusters

Article Abstract:

Business books argue that clusters help industries to develop, and companies within those industries, while governments seek to promote business clusters. Many successful companies stay out of the cluster related to their industry, however, such as Microsoft, not located in Silicon Valley, and the investor, Warren Buffet, who lives far away from Wall Street. George Lucas, the film maker, is also located away from Hollywood. Clusters may help businessmen to become rich, but the very richest seem to operate away from clusters.

The father of invention

Article Abstract:

Alfred Mann is a businessman, inventor and philanthropist who is donating funds to Californian universities to help bridge the gap between industry and the academic world. Mann set up Spectrolab which had the military as itsmain client for some years, and then he set up a number of start-up companies, including Pacesetter, sold to Siemens in 1985. He heads Advanced Bionics, which is developing products that include cochlear implants. He may find that academics are slow to create finished products from their ideas.
