Article Abstract:

Historians are starting to assess the effect of the cold war on Britain. Britain's close links with the US after 1945 are partly a result of tensions between former allies in the 1939-1945 war, the US, France, Soviet Union, and US. British defense spending was relatively high after 1945, again, partly as a result of the cold war. This focus on defense chaneled energy away from other economic activities that could have been more productive, especially since a number of defense programs were failures. British domestic politics were also affected, with socialism portrayed as linked to communism.

According to some geologists, a deadly 110-mile-wide asteroid or comet strike near the Mexican Yucatan peninsula ended the Cretaceous Era. Molten rock in Haiti was argon-dated to match the 65-million year old Yucatan site.
