The general in his exile

Article Abstract:

The British Law Lords are to decide on whether Augusto Pinochet should be immune from extradition. Meanwhile, in Chile, 70% of those surveyed argued that the fate of Pinochet did not have an impact on their lives, and there are other concerns in Chile, such as recession, which do affect people. The Chilean government initially argued that Pinochet should be tried in Chile, but this would be difficult to do. The presidential candidate for the right aims to appeal to the center, and the return of Pinochet could prove an embarrassment for him.

The Law Lords and the general

Article Abstract:

British Law Lords have decided to set asside a Law Lords judgement that General Augusto Pinochet was not immune from prosecution for torture and murder when he was head of state. The Law Lords may rule in Pinochet's favor, but the previous decision represents progress in recognising international agreements on torture and murder. The British government should remove the loophole if Pinochet goes free. The Law Lords were right to set aside the decision, and Pinochet is receiving a fair hearing, which was denied to his victims.

The general sneaks away

Article Abstract:

Augusto Pinochet, former dictator of Chile, has avoided extradition on grounds of ill health, after legal procedings lasting 17 months. Pinochet laft for Chile shortly after the decision was announced. The treatment of other dictators is likely to be influenced by the case, which represents a landmark, despite Pinochet having returned to Chile without being tried. Pinochet could still be charged in Chile though he appears to have ended his political career in that country.
