Article Abstract:

The telecommunications sector is becoming a growth area in the global mergers and acquisitions market, and Germany is no exception. Several large German corporations, including German Federal Railways and Mannesmann, seeking diversification, have established telecommunication subsidiaries, while others have formed strategic alliances to undertake telecom projects. The abolition of Deutsche Telekom's monopoly in 1998 is set to pave the way for rationalization of Germany's telecommunications industry.

Germany's medium-sized businesses or Mittelstand used to be sold when there was no successor, but sales in the 1990s tend to be for more complex reeasons. Automobile parts syppliers are under pressure from customers and wider factors such as business cycles, and changes in currency values and raw materials costs. Tourism copanies have to be larger to be able to compete. Companies can often survive through co-operation with foreign concerns, and deals have been set up with other European companies.

How MJPEP found it good to talk at TSC

The 20 million pounds sterling buy-in/management buyout (BIMBO) of the Airdrie telephone systems operations of Philips was managed by Murray Johnstone Private Equity Partners (MJPEP). MJPEP investors provided 7 million pounds sterling for a 60% stake, with the rest being controlled by the management team, which invested 150,000 pounds sterling. Senior debt was provided by NatWest Markets Acquisition Finance.
