The good, the bad and the ugly: dilemmas in planning for sustainability

Article Abstract:

An operational definition of sustainability is required if the planning system is to become a critical instrument of sustainable development. This requires the development of a multi-dimensional theory of value that defines what people value and why they value it. Sustainable development must be considered in relation to such issues as aesthetics, bioethics and amenity and not purely in relation to threats to health and survival. Cultural, as well as natural heritage, has a bearing on what natural and semi-natural habitats people regard as being critical assets.

Policy Forum: Comment

Article Abstract:

The authors of Sustainability: the technocentric challenge raises some important issues, but there are several flaws. It implies that the concept of sustainable development is in opposition to the need to develop new technologies, but nearly all emerging strategies recognize the importance of new technological development. Also its comments on the acceptability of non-governmental organizations and the planning profession's adoption of concepts of sustainability are out of context and without evidence.

Residential preferences versus sustainable cities: Quantitative and qualitative evidence from a survey of relocating owner-occupiers

Article Abstract:

The motives, behavior, and preferences of a sample of households moving house within the owner-occupied sector in the Cardiff region in South Wales are examined. The findings indicate that most relocated households prefer, and actively seek to move to, less sustainable detached or semi-detached housing with private gardens, often in suburban locations.
