The grand illusion

Article Abstract:

France sees Asterix as a symbol of national pride, and a movie based on the cartoon character is seen as a triumph over the encroachment of Hollywood. The French state is interventionist, and this model is regarded with pride which is linked to strong economic growth following 1945. There is concern that allowing liberal capital too much freedom could involve a loss of values, and this hampers efforts at social and economic reform which are needed in France. Some aspects of US society will have to be imported for France to have a prosperous economy.

Irreconcilable differences?

Article Abstract:

The French state is strong, but this does not always apply to governments. Confrontation may appear endemic, yet there is concern about the dangers that this poses, since past confrontations such as those that occurred in 1968 and 1848 have been traumatic. There is a need for liberal reforms, and some are being carried out, yet there is an avoidance of terms such as privatization that could be seen as Anglo-Saxon. French politicians have to carry out reforms without the French sense of national identity being undermined.
