The great Arcuk debate

Article Abstract:

The UK Architects Registration Acts are to be reviewed. The review is to be carried out by John Warne for the Department of the Environment and threatens the role of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Matters to be considered include the question of the need for a consumer protection body in architecture and whether Arcuk is the appropriate body, and the protection of the title of architect by either Arcuk or the RIBA. The government is known to prefer self-regulation of professions and be opposed to monopolies.

Sustaining consultation: Consultation on the design of Great Notley school highlighted the benefits and pitfalls of the process

Article Abstract:

Consultation is often difficult but is usually worthwhile, and the primary school project at the new village of Great Notley in Essex, demonstrates the value of consultation. Consultation with actual users was not possible in the early stages as there were few local residents initially. The Great Notley Liaison Forum was set up for the design team to consult the local community. Consultation on road issues emphasized the potential problems of dealing with large organizations such as county councils.

Using a contract consultant

Article Abstract:

Architect, Hawkins Brown employed a construction-contract consultant to assist with a complex refurbishment project. The consultant, James R Knowles was brought at the request of the client to reduce confrontation and keep work going on the site. Knowles also provided advice on tenders and objective comment on the architect's position regarding the contractors. Using the consultant enabled the architect to feel confident on legal matters, an area where there is usually little expertese.
