The hobbled cheerleader

Article Abstract:

The US system of democracy has been presented as superior to that of Japan, but there are problems arising from the separation of powers in the US. Projects such as Social Security reform have been affected by lack of cooperation between Congress and president. Strong leadership is offered by neither, and this is evident in the handling of the war in Yugoslavia. The problem is not related to who is in power, but the the system itself. The system was not even questioned during the Monica Lewinsky scandal, and there is a need to reexamine the separation of powers.

Christopher Cox and the Chinese dance

Article Abstract:

Chistopher Cox is a Republican politician who has presided over a committee investigating US policy toward China. The committee is due to publish a report 700 pages long, and has found evidence that nuclear secrets went to China from the New Mexico laboratory of Los Alamos. There have been long-term disagreements between Congress and presidents over China, and Congress could prevent China from joining the World Trade Organization. Problems can arise when there is a gridlock that affects foreign policy, and messages on foreign affairs become muddled.

The dam breaks

Article Abstract:

The passage of the family-leave bill will prove that legislative 'gridlock' has ended in Congress. The Democratic Congress, assured of cooperation from a Democratic President, is renewing efforts to get legislation passed that was vetoed by George Bush.
