The impact of preventive maintenance on system cost and buffer size

Article Abstract:

The problem of computing the optimal buffer inventory level that determines when preventive maintenance is applied to the first machine in a serial, two-machine production system is examined. Specifically, a cost model for facilitating a cost-benefit analysis of different scenarios is developed. The model, which characterizes the stochastic nature of the buffer using Markov chains, shows that preventive maintenance lowers output process variation and system cost.

Review of a Markov decision algorithm for optimal inspections and revisions in a maintenance system with partial information

Article Abstract:

A proposed Markov design algorithm is an improvement of an existing one which is designed to provide data on optimal inspection and revision policy within a class of control-limit rules. An analysis shows that the existing algorithm does not always determine the best policy within these rules. However, the proposed algortihm addresses issues beyond control-limit policies such as equality of test quantity and its comparative relative value.

Stochastic analysis of a non-homogenous Markov system

Article Abstract:

The non-homogenous Markov system is analyzed using a stochastic process. The expectations and central quadratic moments of the number of individuals in the different classes at discrete points of time are computed. The use of recruitment control for attaining goal structures and paths is also studied. The results are illustrated by applying them on manpower system data.
