The intelligence test

Article Abstract:

Japan's Institute of New Generation Computer Technology's perceived failure to develop a fifth generation of computers was fueled by overstatement of the research objectives. While the institute was not able to develop the expected parallel inference machine, its research resulted in fifth-generation hardware and applications which it offered to share with the private sector. However, the technology and the offer were met with lack of industrial interest. Japanese researchers are set to venture into new research focusing on artificial intelligence.

MIT's surprising advise

Article Abstract:

A group of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology suggests that Hong Kong should increase R&D spending, estimated to be only at 0.1% of the territory's gross domestic product, instead of relying on a cheap-labor strategy to make local firms competitive. The advice supports the political policy of Tung Chee Hwa, who will become the territory's chief executive when it reverts to China. Tung proposes a push for investments in technology, both in innovative manufacturing plants and staff training.
