The inter-war heyday of cinema design

Article Abstract:

Inter-war cinema architecture is the focus of a London exhibition entitled Cinemas in Britain - the development of cinema architecture. Many buildings which have not been used used as cinemas since approximately 1965 have been occupied as Bingo halls, although these are now fast disappearing. Modern multiplexes do not have the same sense of occasion and grand atmosphere as the older cinemas. The exhibition lists more than 90 cinemas throughout the United Kingdom.

Building's basic design can be safely exploited

Article Abstract:

The 16,500-seat Nynex arena in Manchester, UK, is a good example of how the basic design of a building can be adapted to meet fire engineering requirements. A standard solution was not possible, so it was decided to exploit the large volume of the arena space for smoke control and management. In this way, an acceptable evacuation time could be achieved.
