The irony of the Golden Share

Article Abstract:

China is planning to sell shares in it state-owned enterprises and will use the idea of "golden shares" so that the government will not lose control of its companies to foreign investors despite not being a majority shareholder. The "golden shares" carry special privileges, such as allowing a power of veto over selling of assets, mergers or changes of structure. The concept of "golden shares" has been used in Malaysia and Great Britain. "Golden shares" may appear to be restrictive but it has been used to make privatisation seem more palatable to the people.

Golden oldie: a respected Amis tribe elder seeks recognition for his chart-topping chants

Article Abstract:

Amis tribesman Lifvon Guo from Taiwan has a singing voice recognized worldwide, as he was surprised to discover when unauthorized recordings of him became chart-toppers for German music producer Enigma. Now he wants recognition for his tribe, whose folk songs are its most prominent cultural element and which he has sung regularly during his farmwork since the age of 10. Legal experts say Lifvon has no legal rights because he did not create the songs, only performed them. Now, however, a record company may pay him for his voice.

Imperfect harmony

Article Abstract:

Magic Stone, a Taiwan record company, is suing to obtain compensation for a couple whose recording of a native chant has made millions but who have received neither credit nor money. The situation is common for performers of ethnic folk music. The pair, members of a Taiwan indigenous tribe, were recorded by a cultural organization. The chant was used as background on an Olympic videotape and was incorporated into an international hit song. The record company hopes to set a precedent for other indigenous performers.
