The late march on Kosovo

Article Abstract:

US president, Bill Clinton, has become involved in the conflict in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, and has made a last-minute effort to secure the support of the US, which has just succeeded. Military involvement has been approved by House Republicans, and the Senate has also approved air strikes. There is narrow support for the action among the US public, as well as agreement that the US is morally obliged to act. Public support has increased since a previous poll. Divisions among the president's advisers and party may explain why he has been slow to act.

Bigger, smarter, better: base closures

Article Abstract:

The US Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission must choose to shut down a new facility in Everett, WA, or a 40-year-old base which employs 8,000 people in Alameda, CA. Both bases have political support because shutdowns will effect the local economy, but Everett is expected to win.

The morning after high noon

Article Abstract:

There is disagreement in the US government over how much to spend on defense. Pres Clinton does not want to spend as much as conservatives who believe that even though the Cold War is over, there is still a lot of political instability in the world.
