Lower Saxony premier Gerhard Schroder is one of the most popular politicians in Germany, yet he is threatening his own political standing by taking the unpopular position that Europe's economic and monetary union should be delayed. Schroder would like to succeed Helmut Kohl as German chancellor.

The current political crisis in Germany may force prime minister Gerhard Schroder to call a general election. Schroder heads a coalition of Social Democrats and Greens, but the Greens have opposed German involvement in the US war against terrorism. Schroder would probably win a snap election.
