Russian tension with Ukraine continues to escalate as talk of secession in Crimea creates concern about the Black Sea fleet. The two countries will probably work out their differences as they stop vying over who inherits the spoils of the toppled Soviet empire and begin to work on developing a relationship based on mutual economic interest.

The Commonwealth of Independent States is falling apart. One reason for this breakup is dissatisfaction in both the Ukraine and Kazakhstan. The Ukraine feels it has been unfairly ignored by the West. When it stops playing with its economy, and agrees to nuclear disarmament, Ukraine will deserve more aid.
