Russia fears that if the former Soviet state of Tajikistan falls into the hands of Islamic fundamentalists, other Central Asian countries will follow. A peacekeeping Russian force is trying to control the Islamic revolt against Tajikistan's ex-communist leader.

The empire strikes back: Tajikistan

Article Abstract:

Russian has sent 15,000 troops to Tajikistan, defending the ruling Kulyab clan from rival clans near and across the border with Afghanistan. The infighting among four clans is for control of the government and opium-smuggling routes.
