Beijing gusher

Article Abstract:

China has begun purchasing oil fields worldwide and transporting the crude oil back to China, rather than simply purchasing oil on the world market. China National Petroleum Corp has pledged more than $8 billion for oil concessions in countries including Iraq and Sudan since mid-1997, and has also invested $12.5 billion in laying four oil and gas pipelines from Russia and Central Asia. This investment is being driven by the realization that China will not be able to meet its own energy requirements in the future.

Innocent abroad

Article Abstract:

China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) has been very active in seeking oil and gas deals abroad since it underwent extensive reorganization in late 1996. It faces many challenges as it seeks to establish itself internationally, mainly because of its lack of international experience. It has only a very small number of employees able to work abroad, and will have to undertake further reforms, including making its subsidiary oilfields into shareholding companies.
