Spot the strongman: signs of a power struggle within the ruling junta

Article Abstract:

The increased army presence in many Burmese towns reflects the power struggle between Gen. Maung Aye, the country's army chief and Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, the intelligence boss. Khin Nyunt sought to neutralize opponents with negotiation rather than force in dealings with ethnic-Karen rebels in 1994, although the military wanted to use force, putting the rebels on the defensive ever since. Maung Aye is said to be reinforcing his hold on power and he is thought to be instrumental in the current crackdown on the National League for Democracy, opposition party.

Loss and exile

Article Abstract:

THe Burmese army's capture of the Manerplaw stronghold seems to signal the end of the Karen organized military rebellion in Burma. Karen troops burned the site before retreating, many into neighboring Thailand. Burmese army units had scouted the area since seizing nearby points in 1992, and a Buddhist breakaway faction of the Karen guided army troops into the compound, controlled by Christian Karen. The Democratic Karen Buddhist Army will apparently take over Manerplaw and assume a role in the govt.
