Thailand is undergoing economic recovery, and there has been economic growth in 1st qtr 1999. The coalition government which has brought in economic reforms is under pressure as elections near. The way that voters perceive the government's performance is unclear, since the impact of the economic critis in rural areas has yet to be fully assessed. There has been a move to rural areas from the cities, and a move from private healthcare and education to public services. Child labor does not appear to have increased, and children are still receiving schooling.
