The opportunist

Article Abstract:

Rhee In Je emerged as a frontrunner early in the 1997 South Korean election campaign. He later slipped back to a position where he can probably do little more than detract form the vote of one of the two leading figures in the poll, but his campaign marks him as a politician to watch in the future. Rhee formed his own party, the New Party by the People, when he failed to win the ruling party's nomination. He established himself as a politician with new ideas, but his comparative youth is against him in the 1997 election campaign.

Making a stink

Article Abstract:

The soaring price of anchovies in South Korea became a political issue when, prior to Arpil 11, 1996, elections, the opposition National Congress for New Politics ran a critical advertsiement. Pointing out a 60% per-kilogram price increase over the prior 12 months, the ad hinted the ruling New Korea party is to blame, and brought to mind the widely-held knowledge that President Kim Young Sam's father is a dominant player in the industry. Unsaid went tohe true culprit: shortages due to pollution and a bad fishing season.
