The other nightmare: aircraft safety

Article Abstract:

The recent crash of an El Al Boeing 747 into an apartment building in Amsterdam illustrates the danger of flying over heavily populated areas. Aircraft makers argue that twin-engined planes are just as safe as those with three or four engines, but the El Al disaster showed that even multi-engined craft can fail.

How safe is your airline?

Article Abstract:

Air travel remains a relatively safe mode of transportation. However, air fatality rates, which declined steadily in the 1960-1990 period, have bottomed out, and may even have begun to rise in 1996. Air safety regulators should push for the adoption of global-positioning satellite technology.
