The planning agenda

Article Abstract:

The main political parties have not shown a great commitment to planning in their manifestos apart from a document published by Labour before the election announcement. The Conservatives are keen on development plans and environmental issues but are not very specific on delivery. Labour want to see regional authorities given more powers from central government. The Liberals and the Green Party concentrate on environmental aspects.

Local government on stage

Article Abstract:

The UK government's thoughts on planning are that all areas should have a share in any new developments. Town planning is seen as helpful to business providing there are no unnecessary restrictions on development. The Labour Party would aim to care for the disadvantaged, but not at the expense of improving life for all. The Local Government Commission is calling for planning consents to be made at different levels of government.

Hesitant steps towards greening

Article Abstract:

Government environmental policy still favours the market approach to ecology issues. This policy is exemplified in the decision to decide on the Channel Tunnel terminal by which site is econonomically viable, rather than on environmental terms. Some critics feel that more public money should be spent on the environment, and that new settlements are preferable to adding onto existing towns.
