The property market and the UK economy

Article Abstract:

The property industry is often regarded as an indicator of the wider UK economy, and there is great interaction between the economy and the property markets. The building cycle results from the interaction of the real economy, the property market and the money market. Property markets have been transformed since the boom of the 1980s and subsequent slump. Lower inflation means that home ownership tends not to be regarded as a financial investment, but as a consumer purchase. Low inflation has also hit the commercial property investment sector.

Mixed blessing: some gain, some suffer from Vietnam's boom

Article Abstract:

Vietnam's economic opening has created increasing disparities between the fates of women in the cities and the 80% living in the countryside. Urban residents have much higher per-capita incomes, and most of the new roadside businesses are run by women. Changing attitudes there encourage higher education for women, and are leading to later marriage and smaller families. Conditions are the reverse in rural areas, with living standards falling as men leave to seek better work in the cities and women are left to operate farms alone.

Mixed attractions

Article Abstract:

The investment climate in Australia's property market has improved as a result of lowered property values, a drop in interest rates and the weakening of the Australian dollar. The Australian government has also eased guidelines for foreign investments. In 1991, Asian buyers spent around A$390 million on properties worth more than A$5 million each. Similarly, some A$240 million worth of hotels were bought mostly by Asian investors in 1991.
