The right stuff: Singapore earns laurels for competitiveness

Article Abstract:

The 1995 World Competitiveness Report ranks Singapore second behind the US in economic competitiveness, with several other Asian countries high in the rankings. The report, which draws on the opinions of 3300 businesspeople worldwide as well as 300 statistical measures, is drawing increased notice, with 150 mentions in press articles in 1994. Hong Kong follows Singapore in competitiveness, with Japan next despite a protectionist economy and government intervention in the market. Scores of other Asian countries are examined.

Problems of plenty, (Economic Monitor: Singapore)

Article Abstract:

Singapore's roaring economy has moderated thanks chiefly to a great slowdown in manufacturing growth, in turn arising from foreign competition and downtime at plants. Businesses are eating much of the 4% rate of increase in unit labor costs, as the consumer price index went up in the second quarter at just 2.1%. A 2.6% unemployment rate makes lower business costs unlikely. Singapore is rapidly getting too expensive compared to regional comeptitors in manufacturing, and will have to shift to more value-added activities.
