The son also rises

Article Abstract:

Mirzan Mahathir's pursuit of Diperdana Corp could make his Konsortium Perkaplan Malaysia's biggest hauling company, but the ascension of he and his brothers could complicate his father's control of the United Malays National Organization. Mahathir Mohamad is unlikely to be challenged for that post, though Mirzan's merger effort so soon after his father's Dec 1995 speech calling for a merger of hauling companies poses uncomfortable questions. KP may also try to buy 30% of recently privatized port-builder Westport Holdings.

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's long-planned financial and interest-rate futures markets will probably open before long despite the Prime Minister's public voicing of doubts in the wake of the Barings PLC collapse. Over-the-counter derivatives currently serve most companies' needs, but a recent failure that cost Berjaya Industrial $14 million and sparked several lawsuits has pointed up the need for a central, well-managed exchange in Kuala Lumpur.

Troubled waters: Bakun dam project keeps hitting the wall

Article Abstract:

The Bakun hydroelectric project in Malaysia is continuing despite being subject to litigation, being spurned by investors and criticised by environmentalists. It is facing other problems caused by the gulf between international firms involved and Malaysian firms. This clash could delay the August listing of Bakun Hydro-Electric Corp, the dam operator. The problems centre on a subcontract issue.
