The sources of productivity change in Spanish banking

Article Abstract:

The productivity performance of savings banks is analyzed. Spanish banking for the period 1986-1993 is used as reference. The Malmquist productivity index is replaced with a generalized Malmquist productivity index to enhance the investigation of the contribution of scale economies to productivity changes. Commercial banks are found to have posted slightly low productivity growth, although they also had a slightly higher rate of potential productivity growth.
