The strategic development of manufacturing: market analysis for investment priorities

Article Abstract:

A study of market reviews, undertaken by consultants for companies wishing to qualify for support under a government scheme, revealed widespread weaknesses in review methods. The companies were applying for support for the strategic development of advanced manufacturing technology under a UK government scheme which operated between 1991 and 1994. The companies had to demonstrate the strategic element of the technology, which necessitated a market survey. Analysis of seven of these surveys shows that the methods used did not provide an in-depth analysis.

When more is less: a minimalist architecture for manufacturing

Article Abstract:

Introducing a new, minimalist architecture for manufacturing can boost quality and productivity. The growing sophistication of computer-integrated manufacturing systems has produced a superabundance of data about manufacturing processes, which bears no relation to production efficiency. The minimalist theory argues that data should not be collected on every aspect of the production process, but only on exceptions or 'things gone wrong'. Minimalism distills production problems into one - disruptions - and coordinates problem solving measures.
