The threat looming over our schools: the dependency of funding on research criteria is placing an unfair burden on schools of architecture

Article Abstract:

The forthcoming Dearing Report could recommend that five year grants for architectural education be withdrawn, where research performance is unsatisfactory. Universities are traditionally respected for their research, but there is an antipathy towards research objectives because of government plans to bring more competition and punitive assessment to the activity. Although architecture intrinsically involves research, the form of its product is inappropriate for the Higher Education Funding Council's (HEFCE) assessment criteria.

Housebuilders need to reassess priorities

Article Abstract:

UK housebuilders tend to show very little imagination in terms of design. They focus new homes around fireplaces which do not even function, for example, simply because purchasers often seem to recreate an image of the past. In doing so, housebuilders fail to make use of the freedom in modern planning which new technology can offer. Furthermore, build quality is often poor and new houses offer only limited space.

Without experiments, architecture will die

Article Abstract:

The most successful architecture is made up of talent, the right moment and patronage. It relies most heavily on vision, freedom and courage. It is vital that young architects are given the opportunity to express the mood of the society within which they are operating. This is not happening in the 1990s, when good architecture is still emerging but young architects are not being given enough freedom.
