The truth about Taiwan

Article Abstract:

China's attitude to Taiwan is more likely to prevent reunification than to encourage Taiwan to reunite with the mainland. There is an ambiguity in relation to Taiwan's world position, and this has helped preserve the status quo. Taiwan has moved toward democracy, and this has put affected relations with China. The US is seeking to improve relations between the two countries, and has links with both which represent contradictory policies. China will need the backing of the people of Taiwan if reunification is to be achieved, and this is unlikely with China's behavior toward Taiwan.

Where Taiwan and China meet

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's legis;ature has voted in favor of setting up three links with China, permitting direct transportation, communications and commerce between the Pescadores, Mantsu and Jinmen, Taiwanese islands, and the Fujian province. Cross-border links between Taiwan and China are already growing, and Taiwan's new president, Chen Shui-bian, is formalizing those links. Mainalnd China ranks third among Taiwan's export markets. There are political differences between the two countries, and it is unclear whether growing economic links can help to ease the differences.

Taiwan's long farewell?

Article Abstract:

There has been a strong Chinese reaction to a statement by the Taiwanese president, Lee Teng-hui, that relations between China and Taiwan are to be seen as between two countries. China argues that Taiwan and China are part of a single country. Taiwan sees the US as having taken China's side, and the US has put pressure on Taiwan to carry out talks with China. The US will send envoys to both Taiwan and China seeking restraint. Lee may believe that he is the only person able to take a strong stance on the issue of relations with China.
