The workshop of a new society

Article Abstract:

Britain saw a rise in population from 1700, as well as a shift out of agriculture into industry, and into urban areas from the countryside. Industrialization could be dated from the 17th century, and only affected a few key industries by the 1830s. Usage of coal, the development of rural industry, and commercialization of manufactured goods also helped the process take off. Political stability, relatively laissez faire policies, and nearness to the sea also helped. The working class saw a rise in living standards from 1820, which grew more pronounced from 1870.

Now for the next battle

Article Abstract:

Economic recovery is underway in Britain, with modest growth forecast for 1993-94. Still, the 1.3% growth predicted for 1993 and the 2.5% growth forecast for 1994 would give Britain the fastest growing economy in the European Community.
