Theme: bricks, blocks and pavers

Article Abstract:

Mechanically laid paving is being used more often in the UK, as it reduces the cost and shortens the time spent on laying concrete paving. The UK building industry is trying to address the shortage of bricklayers, with an estimated shortfall of around 5000, by introducing a 'People for Better brickwork' initiative. There are fewer fully trained bricklayers and a decline in the number of young people taking bricklaying apprenticeships. The UK brick manufacturers can offer a very wide range of products, with many new coloured and textured bricks coming on to the market.

Study blocks

Article Abstract:

The Brooke City Technology College, Corby, Northamptonshire, England has been designed by Beynon Machin Architects. The brief was for a flexible, open plan building which provided good communication between the five teaching departments. The college is sited on a green fields site with the buildings forming the sides of a pentagon. Concrete blockwork has been used internally and externally. The cream, shot blasted external blocks were chosen to resemble the local stone. Inside, smooth faced cream blocks are used.

Building which explains itself

Article Abstract:

The John Cabot City Technology College, Bristol, England has been designed by architect, Fielden Clegg. Teaching areas are connected to the assembly and sports halls by an 'internal street.' There is also a crescent shaped central facilities block. The architects were encouraged to make the structure as legible as possible so the building itself could be a teaching aid. The steel-frame, brick clad building is energy eficient and incorporates a degree of flexibility.
