Germany has been forced to drastically increase its public-sector debt to finance its attempts to rebuild the economy of Eastern Germany. In 1991, the German government received only 30 billion DM in taxes from the East, while it doled out 170 billion DM in aid. Still more aid will be needed.

Fears of unified Germany's strength have been replaced with fears about how Germany's collapsing economy will effect the rest of Europe. Strikes in the public sector have crippled the country and citizens are protesting higher taxes created to pay for the cost of unification.
