They loot graves, don't they?

Article Abstract:

There is a risk of the Mayan heritage of Central America being lost due to looting in response to increased demand for artefacts. Guatemala is seeking to encourage cultural tourism and has asked the US to ban imports of artefacts from Guatemala. Legal pressure has also been put on collectors in the US. The Guatemalan government is also seeking to control looting within Guatemala itself, though some sites have already been so badly affected that they cannot be salvaged.

Sustainable arguments

Article Abstract:

The Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) has altered its stand on conservation of endangered species from a 'no use' stand to one of sustainable use. Convention participants have realized that bans were ineffective and futile while sustainable use would encourage harvesting at levels that would enable the survival of the species while providing economic returns.
