Thrones that count

Article Abstract:

Asian monarchs exert greater political influence than their few remaining Western counterparts. Asia's most important monarchs are Thailand's King Bhumibol, Japan's Emperor Akihito, Malaysia's King Azlan Shah and Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. Only the sultan rules as an absolute rather than constitutional ruler. In Thailand and Malaysia the monarchs help to stabilize the political system, while Japan's 1,300-year-old monarchy tends to overshadow the person who holds it. All three monarchies will probably survive for many years to come.

Pomp and peccadilloes: princely lifestyles come under closer public scrutiny

Article Abstract:

Asia's royal families evince a remarkable diversity in their personalities and styles of living. Malaysia's sultans have damaged their political standing by their spendthrift habits and reputed proclivity for gambling and other vices. Thailand's King Bhumibol is known for his informality, personal integrity and skill as a musician. Japan's Emperor Akihito and his family have adopted a mixed Japanese and Western lifestyle that includes a fondness for music.
